Hi Kate,
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I recieved a Sony Ebook Touch reader (PRS-505) for Chrissy (2009) as well and it has been the most frustrating gift since. The real reason....I am in no way computer literate. So, can you or someone who comments on your informative site explain simply how I am able to load books (step instructions) to the reader and where to successfully obtain the books from. I am an avid reader and feel like throwing the reader against the wall.
Please...
Sarah
PS. Its great to see positive comments on the reader...scanning through the net, there have not been many of those.

Ah, gotcha. I've not used an loaning library type things with the Reader. Makes sense, but very lame :(

Still, great to be catching up on some classics though. http://feedbooks.com/ is a great source of very nicely formatted classics - you can also get it to create epubs from RSS feeds which is incredibly useful.

@alan: thanks for the zoom tip! i'll be making use of that one.

unfortunately i'm fairly sure the adobe drm trick doesn't work with the content you can borrow from libraries (eg thru overdrive). because the files expire, there's something a bit different about the drm. i've used this method for stuff i've bought, tho, and it works perfectly.

Few tips after owning a PRS-505 for a while:

PDFs: Hold down the zoom button for a few seconds and it'll rotate the display 90degrees - this splits the PDF page into top and bottom (with a bit of an overlap - which is greyed out). Makes it *much* easier to read.

Macs and Adobe DRM: This only has to be activated on a PC. Once. Once you have have done this and linked the 505 to your Adobe account, you can just drag and drop files from the mac to the Sony. You don't need to use windows or the Adobe software to transfer the files! You can authorise 5 devices to your Adobe account (and you can de-auth the windows machine after you have activated the Sony).

Hope that helps you have even more fun with your reader!

alas, that is the prs-505's true failing: it's slim design and lack of pages is not conducive to the hiding of rock hammers. but, should you be able to procure one elsewhere, the prs-505 would provide you with constant amusement during your long years in hiding.

Sounds good! But can you hide a rock hammer inside the PRS-505 if you want to tunnel your way out of prison?
